Gigondas is one of the top crus in the southern Rhone, often dominating its famous neighbor Chateauneuf du Pape, and Pierre Amadieu is a benchmark winery for the region. When their wines come into the PLCB system at a good price, I make sure to review them for our wine newsletter. A few years back, I reviewed the wonderful 2009 Romane Machotte. I am glad to see their classic Grand Romane showing up now as a Chairman’s Selection. I’d suggest buying a bunch and storing them away for half a year. These will be delicious next winter, and perfect with grilled lamb chops.
The wine is a high toned ruby red, with scents of crushed lavender and currant as it is poured into the glass. Flavors of allspice and Thai basil cut through the lively black fruit that edges toward red cherry. A classic Gigondas minerality is on display here, ...
